Multiple Animal Households put Pressure on RSPCA Centre
06/05/2010
‘Over Run with Rabbits and Small Animals’

The RSPCA Coventry Animal Centre is appealing for new adopters of Rabbits and Small Animals.

So far this year the centre has successfully found homes for over 80 Bunnies and Small Animals. Even with such high rehoming the Centre still remains full to bursting after a surge in multiple animal households due to indiscriminate breeding. The Centre urgently needs to find new homes for over 50 furry friends currently in its care.

The animal centre has had to help the inspectors deal with a large number of households full of small animals across Coventry and Nuneaton. Some of the individual houses needing our help have involved over 50 animals in once place.

Caroline Barnsley Small Animal Care Assistant says ‘Almost every other week we receive a call from an inspector asking for help with multiple animals. Only in the last few weeks we have had to help with a house with over 50 domestic rats and two houses with an excess of 30 Rabbits each.’’

Caroline continues ‘We are only able to help the inspectors when we have rehomed animals to make sufficient space to take in more. It is crucial that we attract more adopters in order to help the many animals needing our support’

The centre has seen a massive increase in the number of animals needing to come into its care after taking 87 Degu’s from one small flat in December last year. Most of the Degu’s have found new homes but over twenty babies are still waiting to be adopted. Along with the Degu’s there are lots of Rabbits, Rats, Chinchillas and Hamsters all looking for new homes.

Anyone interested in adopting a Rabbit or Small Animal can visit the centre during its opening times (11-4 every day except Tuesday) or call 024 76 336616 for more details. You can also find most of the animals available for adoption on our website www.rspca-coventry.org.uk
