Coventry Animal Centre Appeals for Loving Homes

The RSPCA Coventry Animal Centre ended 2009 with a massive intake of Degu’s. The centre is now appealing for loving homes for Dozens of Degu’s after taking in over 80 from one house in the city. The small rodents similar to Gerbils but slightly larger were found living in inappropriate and overcrowded conditions and were removed by an RSPCA Inspector.

Several of the Degus have been moved to other centres across the region, however Coventry is still left with in excess of 35 who are now looking to find new homes.

Adele Byrne Small Animal Assistant says ‘As all the Degu’s were living in various groups and mixed sexes we think a number of the females may be pregnant. All our cages are full to overflowing and we desperately need to rehome some of the males to make more room for the potential baby boom. ‘

Degu’s have a long gestation of 90 days and the centre will be holding on to all the females until that time has passed.

Degus make great family pets and with regular handling become very friendly, they also provide hours of entertainment watching them causing mischief in their cages. Degus are active creatures and need an ample sized cage with different levels to keep the busy and well exercised.

Three of the Degus have already settled into their new home with the Centre Managers sister and her family and are already proving a hit with the entire family.

Glenn Mayoll Centre Manager says ‘It is great to see some of the Degus settled and well in a new home. They do make great family pets and I would like to encourage anyone interested in taking on a small animal to come and meet these wonderful and interesting Degu’s.

The small animal unit at the centre is already full with Rabbits, Guinea pigs, Budgies and other Small Animals if you are looking to rehome a small pet please visit us first.

The centre is able to order in suitable cages for the Degus for the public to buy.
