Appeal for New Owners during RSPCA Week

The number of Cats and Small Animals on the Centre’s waiting list has soared to an all time high over the past few months as the recession begins to impact pet owners.

As RSPCA week begins the Animal Centre based on Coundon Wedge Drive, Coventry is appealing for new owners for the Cats and Small animals in their care. The number of animals needing to come into the Centre’s care has reached such a high that 12 animals of varying types are being fostered by staff and volunteer fosterers.

Lenny one of the longest staying cats has been at the Centre now for nearly three months and is desperate to find a new home. He is an 8 year old chap and a real lap cat with bags of character. He would really like an owner who is at home most of the day and would prefer to be the only pet. Lenny does need a special diet too as he has had problems in the past with his bladder but the diet keeps him well.

Louise Labram, Animal Centre Supervisor, says ‘Although Lenny has been with us the longest he certainly is not the only cat being overlooked because of age and health problems. I would really like to encourage anyone considering adopting a cat or a small animal to visit the Centre. We are currently home to over 80 cats and small animals’.

The Centre takes animals from Coventry, Rugby, Nuneaton and surrounding areas. As neither RSPCA Nuneaton nor Rugby branches have animal centres they support and rehome their animals through the Coventry Animal Centre.

Glenn Mayoll, Centre Manager says ‘I would like to thank the people of Coventry and surrounding areas for all their support of the Animal Centre over the years. However the Animal Centre, which is currently closed to dogs due to our new kennels being built, is facing pressure from the recession like everyone else. There is an increase in animals looking for new homes which in turn puts pressure on our limited finances. We run the Animal Centre on the donations and legacies which we receive from the public and these have fallen dramatically. So as well as rehoming our animals we would ask people to ‘dig deep’ to help us, if they can, so that we can continue to help these animals find the loving homes they deserve.’

‘I would like to remind the public that although building work is taking place on the kennels we still remain open to Cats and Small Animals which include everything from Gerbils, Hamsters and Chinchillas to Rabbits’.

Anyone interested in rehoming an animal should visit the centre on Coundon Wedge Drive or call
