‘Rottweiler’s Don’t Make Good Pets’…What A Load Of Rubbish!22/06/2008 People are urged to rehome a Rottweiler from the Coventry RSPCA Animal Centre The Rottweiler has become the second most unwanted dog in the Wales and West region, a new RSPCA survey has revealed. Through no fault of its own, the breed is suffering bad press due to its aggressive image and popularity as a status symbol. The statistics show that regionally the Staffie is the breed that ends up at RSPCA animal centres most frequently, followed by Rottweiler’s however the Coventry animal centre has seen a massive increase in the number of Rottweiler’s needing new homes. The animal centre has been offering a temporary home to four Rottweiler’s who have been at the centre for some weeks and have had no luck in finding a new home. On Friday of this week another Rottweiler was dumped by its owner in the reception of the centre making our total now five. The centre is finding it very difficult to find these dogs homes due to the poor press they have received over recent years. Animal Centre Supervisor Caroline Hailstone said “Rottweiler’s have had terrible press, but this is not of their own making – in fact they’re wonderful dogs. If well cared for and properly trained they can make brilliant companions. Our experience suggests that problems occur when bad owners exploit the Rottweiler’s desire to please by training them to show aggression. “Angel a Rottweiler cross has been at the centre since February and although she is adorable and really eager to please she is still yet to find a new home. Angel gets on well with some other dogs and could live with children 8 years plus. The RSPCA believes so many Rottweilers’ are in need of new homes because sadly the breed is popular with irresponsible owners who are interested in their own image rather than their dog’s welfare. The Society is emphasising that it is bad and ill-informed owners who are to blame for the Rottweiler’s aggressive reputation, not the dogs themselves. In fact the Coventry animal centre is encouraging anyone thinking of getting a dog to consider a Rottweiler as, with the right owners, they can make the perfect pet. Professionally trained staff, work hard to rehabilitate all animals in the Society’s care. Before they can be adopted, each animal has a behavioural assessment and health check to help match them with the right new owner. Animal Centre Manager Glenn Mayoll said “We are really desperate for these dogs to find new loving and understanding homes. Unfortunately we have seen very little interest in them from visiting public. We are in desperate need of support from the people of Coventry and surrounding areas to find these lovely dogs new homes.” If you are interested in rehoming one of the centres Rottweiler’s or any other animal, please visit the centre on Coundon Wedge Drive or call 024 76 336616. |
